In October 2001, trial products for the Pure Mat with rose and blue coatings were produced. We invited Mr. F, who had assisted us at the lecture last year when the InfoComm Exhibit was held. We compared images on the screens with coatings in rose, blue and gray, and the current Pure Mat.
We used Mitsubishi's projector #LVP-2001, and watched "Meet Joe Black" and "Shakespeare in Love." It was evaluated that colors looked too strong on the screen with a rose coating, and that the screen with a gray coating was best because colors looked natural among the screens with the three different colors. It was also evaluated that the screen with a blue coating was intriguing because images came into clear focus on the screen, and looked three-dimensional.
Around the middle of October 2001, we invited Mr. K to the head office in Tokyo for the third time. We compared images on the screens with coatings in rose, blue and gray, and the current Pure Mat. We watched the same films as those used when we invited Mr. F. Mr. K said, "The screen with a gray coating was the least interesting. I expected that the screen with a rose coating would work but I liked the screen with a blue coating best today."
At our in-house meeting held at the end of October 2001, we had a heated discussion about the screens with a blue coating and a gray coating. At the meeting, we got embroiled in a dispute because of a difference of opinion. While some people said that the screen with a gray coating was better because it embodied the concept of Pure Mat, others said that it would be meaningless unless the screen with a blue coating, which brought out high contrast, was adopted. I started thinking that we should make a darker gray coating.
Around the middle of November 2001, Mr. A visited our firm for the first time. He said that the screen with a blue coating was the best among the screens with the three different coatings, and asked whether we had a try at a screen with a black coating. We were able to see differences clearly among the colors, as expected. We watched "Shakespeare in Love" and an old film, "Casablanca." We decided to compare a projection screen with a charcoal black coating and a projection screen with a dark gray coating.
